Adhesive capsulitis is also known as: frozen shoulder, calcific tendonitis of the rotator cuff, scapulocostal syndrome, subacromial fibrosis, pericapsulitis, or acromioclavicular arthritis. These musculoskeletal conditions are defined as a disorder of the shoulder joint that is caused by the tightening of the joint capsule.

Freezing stage. In this stage, there is a gradual onset of a dull sholder ache and stiffness that slowly develops into pain, which occurs both at rest and during movement. The shoulder stiffness incases, reducing range of motion. This stage lasts between 6 weeks-9 months.

Frozen stage. During this stage, shoulder pain may lessen, but remains stiff and movement is difficult. This makes it harder to comlete daily activities. This stage lasts from 2 to 6 months.

Thawing (recovery) stage. In this stage, shoulder pain lessens and range of motion slowly improves.

Massage and Adhesive Capsulitis

Massage can be applied to the area at any stage because the inflammatory process associated with adhesive capsulitis is chronic in naturу and not acute. Massage, especially deep friction massage, over sholder muscles may reduce pain and improve mobility.
