The pineal gland or epiphysis is an integral part of the brain structure and is responsible for the functioning of the endocrine system. It is involved in the process of puberty and the production of growth hormone.

The pineal gland is a small pine-nut shaped structure behind the pituitary in the diencephalon of the brain. This gland produces the hormone melatonin and plays an important role in regulating sleep.
