It is unofficially called the “sleep hormone” for its ability to immerse the body in an altered state of consciousness, ensuring complete rest.
Epiphysis or pineal gland produces melatonin, which regulates the circadian rhythms of all living organisms 24-hours sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin is a natural hormone and is similar in structure to serotonin, plays a critical role inwhen we fall asleep and when we awaken. Melatonin increases production in darkness andbdecreases production in bright light. Melatonin also regulates the release of famale reproductive hormones and appears to regulate immune responses.
